BOSTON - November 18, 2002: Using their newly acquired Ikegami HDL-V90 HD cameras, ABC affiliate WCVB-TV, Boston, recently shot a promo in HD advertising "ABC World News Tonight" and local evening news. The station captured the footage of "World News" anchor Peter Jennings and WCVB anchor Natalie Jacobson in a fast-paced multi-camera shoot.
"Ikegami produces a picture that's better than anything on the market," says Mike Keller, Director of Engineering for WCVB. "The Ikegami HDL-V90 cameras were ideal for shooting a promo in HD that made the most of Peter Jennings-visit to WCVB."
The Peter Jennings spot is one of many ways that the station is using Ikegami cameras to make HD an efficient component of its daily broadcasts. "For the Jennings promo we wanted to shoot from multiple angles to get that fast look, but the cost of using three film cameras would have been prohibitive,"Keller says. "Compared to the expense of shooting on film, the reduced cost of shooting in HD with high quality Ikegami digital cameras allowed us to do it. Plus, unlike film, you don't have to wonder what your footage will look like once it's been developed. We can see it all on our HD monitors, for that same safety factor we're familiar with in video."
For ENG/EFP shooting in SD, WCVB also recently added 21 new Ikegami HL-DV7W DVCAM digital cameras. "We chose Ikegami because we felt they were the only DVCAM cameras built to withstand the rigors of broadcasting," says Keller. "Without question, they have the best construction and weatherproofing. When we looked for an HD solution, we decided to go with Ikegami again for the same reasons."
The Ikegami HDL-V90 is an integrated DVCPRO HD digital camera, using 2.2 million pixel 1080i CCDs. With leading-edge next generation digital processing LSI (ASIC), resulting from Ikegami's advanced digital technology experience, it's a digital camera that produces high-quality pictures through full digital processing, including 12-bit A/D conversion. With a body as small and light as an SDTV camera, low in power consumption, high functionality, and integrated DVCPRO HD, the HDL-V90 ensures the best performance in image reproduction as well as recording in HDTV.
The powerful Ikegami HL-DV7W takes the DVCAM format to exciting levels with 520,000 pixel IT CCDs and 16:9/4:3 switchability for high-end production. Enhanced by +48dB Hyper Gain for very low light conditions, scene and lens files, Smart Media memory card, Super V vertical resolution, high res viewfinder and more. All of WCVB's Ikegami cameras are affixed to Canon HJ11x4.7B IRSD and Canon J21x7.8B IRSD lenses.
With the industry-leading image quality of their Ikegami cameras, WCVB will continue to provide its viewers with more compelling HD content like the Peter Jennings promo. "Ikegami cameras produce that smoother texture and detail that makes the eye fall in love with HD," Mike Keller says. "Having them as a part of our daily production schedule makes a great deal of sense."
